New Member, Sopwith Kit 801 Build

Postby Gorgar » Mon Dec 07, 2020 11:00 am

Hi.

I am in process of building this kit. Please comment to this post. Just want to share info a bit during my build. This forum looks a little sparse with recent posts. Glad to be doing it. It looks like an “oldie”. Very fragile die cut. Just finishing the fuselage and am sanding it down now.

I have done 3 Guillows planes about 1970. In 2020, I saw this Sopwith Kit 801 in a wood shop and was given it! Awesome find.

I grew up using standard airplane orange wood glue and am trying the “super glue” way for this kit. I am trying to avoid the old toulinaine glue because I have family that would not like the smell.

I am deciding my build, It’s for display only. I think I will not cover it and keep balsa exposed? Doing research on staining? Maybe tungoil? Have to research more about the “white” cardboard etc. Etc etc. but enjoying it a lot!

Thanks.

As the major wood components of the aircraft will have been made from spruce, you may want to try marine spar varnish spray for the finish. WWI bare bones display models really look neat, especially if you finish it with flying wires.
