mixing paint into the 50/50 mix

Postby Stephen Napasney » Sat Mar 15, 2008 10:11 pm

Can paint be added to the 50/50 mix for painting? If so, is it worth it, and what would be the best choice to use for the mixing? Naturally it would have to be acrylic due to the water-based qualities of the 50/50 mix.

Believe we are talking about 50/50 water and Elmers. Interesting question. First an even mix of the paint (thin down the acrylic ?) into the 50/50 would be essential. I can see this as a potential for an undercoating but, final finish coat???

Yes we are talking about the glue and water mix. As for the addition of paint, yes it would be used for the undercoating process. Sort of a killing two birds with one stone method.

I thinking of using 25% of paint, 25% of 50% by volume Isopropyl Alcohol, and 50% glue. My choice for the 50% by volume is due to the fact that it is 50% water to 50% iso. The water could be used for the glue and the iso as the paint thinner and drying agent.

acrylic paint is acrylic polymer based not water based , it can be thinned with water , but it relys on acrylic polymer crosslinking to cure, too much water (or alcohol?) and it can take forever to dry.
not sure how the proposed mix would react but it could possibly remain sticky for a long time.

I was thinking of using either tamiya paints or citadel colors. They are water soluable. The alcohol mix is what I use as brush cleaner and thinner with much success on my plastic projects. if these won't work, do you have any suggestions for adding color to the glue/water mix

There you have it, from the master.

All I will add is that when I apply tissue dry using a glue stick per the Easy Built Models method I don't seal the wood at all. But in all other methods of tissue adhesion you will want to seal the wood first.

The reason that I was asking about mixing paint into the 50/50 mixture is because I haven't found any nitrate dope around my area yet? So I was thinking of using the 50/50 mixture as dope. With that said I thinking of using it for my base coats. For insatnce on the underbelly and top of the aircraft. I am using regular tissue paper which is white, and thought that i would be able to kill to birds with one stone.

If it's nitrate dope you need, check out Great Hobbies and R/C Wings.

I believe you'll find both links that I provided are located in Canada, one in Prince Edward Island and the other in Blockhouse, Nova Scotia.

However, Xanadu probably can offer better sources than the two that I was able to dig up using google.

There are quite a few places in Canada to order Dope from, in Winnipeg I know of 2 for sure, plus several internet sites in Canada as well.

Heck, I would even be willing to pick some up at the LHS I frequant and ship it to you.
Just pay me actual costs, thats it.

Where abouts in Canada you located?
I work in Winnipeg, MB.
