Mark's Guillow Anniversary?

Postby supercruiser » Tue Dec 16, 2008 4:14 pm

Hey folks,
I was looking through the Memberlist and noticed that Mark, our site administrator joined December 31, 1969. Now the forum has only been up since 2005, so I think this might be his join date with Guillow's itself.
That means he has been with Guillow for 40 years, in about 2 weeks.
Or it's the first time he built a Guillow model.

Just thought I'd mention this, seems like a notable moment.

Wow! I was 3.
This sure is a family type business. I had no idea he has been into Guillow's models that long.

Hey All, I hate to "burst the bubble" ... but thought I would chime in and solve the mystery.

Yes, my Admin name DOES say that I joined back in 1969 .... but to tell the truth I have NO idea why. When I made the Message Board back in 2005 that is the date that was given to my Admin account. Strange :?:

I have been with Guillow's for quite some time now, almost 20 years, but no .... have not worked here since 1969. Come on I feel old enough some days  but not 40 years in the same job YET.

While I'm here typing let me just say to ALL that I think ya'all put up some very good subjects, thoughts and help .... it's great to see the chatting about model building and helping each other out. Keep up the good building.

I wish you ALL a Merry Christmas and a very Happy Holiday season.

In the install/install.php script the admin user date gets set on line 910 with the following command:
Code: Select all
SET user_regdate = " . time();

Where time() returns the number of seconds since the Unix Epoch (January 1 1970 00:00:00 GMT). Odds are there was a problem with the time() command so it returned -1 to indicate an error, and one second before January 1 1970 is December 31 1969.

Thank you Mark for administering this forum and keeping spammers non-existent. Also thanks to Guillow's for funding the forum and making models for us to build.

Thanks for clarifying things, Mark. By the way, I did think it was unlikely. However, we just had a guy retire at my work after 37 years. Thank you for all that you do at Guillow.

SteveM.... how do you come up with that stuff? Never mind, I don't want to know.

Mostly a combination of OCD and avoiding doing real work. Once we knew that Mark did not pick the date I had to find out why it defaulted to such a strange date. Since phpBB is open source I was able to get the code and grep it for "1969" which returned no results. If 1969 was not hard coded then it must have been dynamically generated, so I looked up how the time() and date() function calls work and all the pieces started to fall together.

Congratulations!
This interactive site is nice for the hobby and I never knew there were so many builders out there. I have been building rubber powered balsa planes for over 35 years off and on and the overwhelming majority of them have been Guillow products.

Keep up the good work!
