Guillow plastic parts

Plastic parts give me problems... for instance, how best to attach prop blades to hubs when no spinner is involved? How to make the attachment look realistic... and keep the join solid? Pix of my 11 Guillows hanging from my ceiling to follow momentarily. Meanwhile, a B 24 and P 38 are ready to start building, in reverse order.

Reverse order build?

You have them together already, and you will now disassemble them and put them back into the box?

Not sure exactly what you mean in the first question about the prop and spinner though.

Yep! thought I would try something different! Seriously... "reverse order" meaning the 38 will build first, then the 24. All 11 Guillows I've built require the prop to be constructed from the balsa... so, when built, I have trouble assembling the prop to the hub... or at least making it look like its attached. A spinner will hide the attachment but many models have no spinner, just the exposed hub. What am I missing? Surely, there's an easy way that will make the completed propeller and hub look realistic??

Scuse me Xanadu... I'm still trying to figure this site out. I looked at your P 47 prop pix; they do help a lot.. Tell me, did you simply glue the blades to the plastic hub? That's what I've done but they are very fragile. Your 47 looks great. The P 47 is one of my 11 hanging and I'll have a picture up shortly, with the others. Your detail is much further along than mine... it wasn't until I got on VirtualAerodrome that I learned how professional the details make it. Also, question #2... any tips on getting a smooth join between the two plastic halves on struts, hub, etc etc?? You're in Canada! Wow... ladybugs up there too... we have a gazillion here, in Georgia. Hope to get your further input re two questions... Gratias!

The prop was carved as 2 separate 2 blade props, with a balsa hub. Then the hub cut off one of the them, and the blades glued to the other hub, making a 4 blade. One of the pics without the plastic spinner shows the all wood hub.

The spinner hub is then glued onto the blades and hub.

Basically making an all balsa hub, the gluing the spinner or plastic hub on place afterward.


Making a better joint on plastic can be very frustrating to say the least.

Some fill the 2 plastic halves with wood filler of sorts. Or you can use anything that will harden once let set in the mold. Then you sand the 2 halfs smooth, and glue them together. Will a solid backing behind the seam, you can trim and sand it smooth without worrying about "breaking" thru the plastic.
Also canopy glue works great for these plastic parts for doing seams.

Go to virtualaerodrome and see David Duckett's hanger. Check out the one for the Catalina PBY. He shows how he does the plastic pieces with filler on some landing gear struts.


Ladybugs here now?............nope, too darned cold. Its -26* right now here. Last summer had loads of them, drove me nuts.

I appreciate more than you know your comments. I plan to begin my next build before Feb. 15... I've got a few items on order. I will be trying to post a picture or two in the next several days.... watch for them and the P 47 T Bolt. After getting to know this site, I hope to see significant improvements in my next project. Thank you for some conscientious help. I really apprecte it. Also, I'll plan to offer up some pictures of my next work-in-progress, beginning in couple of weeks... check in with my hangar. I flew jets back in the '60s but nothing beats the old prop=driven aircraft of WW II era. Maybe you'll recognize a few of your tips in my next project pictures. I should be so lucky comparing to your Thunderbolt... mine's a distant second... Thank you! Hugh White
