Cessna 180

Ask other modelers for a little help / knowledge ?

All the pictures show dihedral, but the plan dosent show it. I got this kit off ebay. Maybe the there was another instruction sheet that did not get to me. I also did not get tissue, window plastic or a prop. Still got it cheap and now I have the plans so can build as many as I want.
Gonna test with flat wings and then play with dihedrel and polyhedral.
The flight is very stable as it is, but I think the prop is too small to really pull it. Have only used about 200 turns.
Just waiting on the weather.

I was told larger props work best on rubber powered models. I wonder what the formula is? I was advised to use a six inch peck prop. on my 900 series Mustang.

The kit comes with a 1/4 wide by 32 1/2 inch one strand of rubber.do'nt know if this helps any! 8)

I read that a scale rubber powered plane needs a prop 25 % of the wing span. Not a hard fast rule, just a good place to start. I dont know for sure. Just a starting point.
!/4 x 32 inch seems very big to me. I have some 1/4 rubber and will try it next chance I get.
I do know that a rubber powered craft needs a bigger prop than an elect because rubber turns slower.
Thanks guys for the help. Props and rubber combos are a mystry to me.

This model is fairly light I would start with a loop of 1/8 inch, flat, FAI tan, sport rubber about 1-1/2 times the hook to peg length. Make sure that it it lubed, I use automotive silicone spray, and stretch wind it. The 1/8 inch wide rubber will take more turns, for an equivalent length, than the 1/4 inch wide rubber. The 1/4 inch rubber will have more torque and may be overkill for a model of this size and weight. The rubber should not be more than 20% of the total weight of the model. In fact, some competitions limit the rubber weight to 15% of the gross weight. Using a small motor is beneficial in smaller models since, up to the point where the model does not have enough power to climb, there can be a positive trade off of power for lower weight.

Thanks for the info on rubber weight. What size of light weight prop would you suggest for this model?
I have a Cub 95, similar in size to the 180, which I will start after the 900 series Mustang.

Try a six or seven inch diameter prop. The Peck gray plastic props are more commonly available and work better than the Guillow's supplied prop. The Czech made Ikara props are the best that I have found, but cost 3 to 4 times as much and not available everywhere. Make sure that you get one with the right prop shaft hole. They come with holes for 1/32 and 3/64 prop shafts. The standard Guillow's prop shaft is 3/64 inch. You probably want a round tipped, six inch prop for the Cessna. The six inch prop will turn a bit faster but be easier to trim under power.

Thanks kittyfritters. Thats a good topic. I am currently using 1/8 sport. 1 time prop hook to rear peg. After trimming, will go 1.5 times that lengh.

I did not move the rear peg forward. I'm hopeing for those few extra turns. Hope it doesent upset the c/g. Maybe I should have balanced with a full size motor. Just recently learned to braid. Hopeing that helps.

Sure wish the wind would let up. :cry:

Finish my cub 95 :D it getting 70 to 80 feet flights :shock: it turned out to be a ugly duckling paint turn out bad don,t want to make it heavy!Went with 1/8 strands of rubber doulded really smooth may add the window may not. don,t think it matters its just to uglly!but I like it any ways.Ikeep it. 8)

The wind is blowing fairly strong now so I flew it down wind.The wind got it and it started spining like a helli and hit nose first!No harm to it.I could win the uglyest airplane contest I think LOL. :lol: Still cool 8)

The wind had die down so I had to take my cub 95 out side and fly some!The rubber band had broke after about four flights then I put the same ones back in and added link to them with gave me more power.So it was roling from the truqe. I decided to throw it starith up and let it level off and glide down.Well it was beautiful but she didn,t level off she went straith up like planed then keep going back doing a complete loop almost pulled out went nose first into the ground hard pack ground driving the porp bearing thruogh the nose LOL.its A though little bird I fixed it hope its perty weather tomorrow. 8)
