yellowed canopy

Postby Doppiejohn » Mon May 18, 2020 12:29 pm

I have an old model kit that I bought at an auction, it was unopened for at least 30 years. When I opened it the canopy was yellow, I guess from age and maybe heat from storage??
Does anyone know of a way I can restore the canopy back to it's clear state?

Regrettably, you cannot. Your best bet is to either form a mold of the existing canopy with Plaster of Paris with a dowel sticking out of the bottom or carving a balsa plug. Then follow the techniques shown here:

https://www.fullsizeplans.com/images/nf ... assise.pdf
http://www.ffscale.co.uk/page4f.htm

It is not any harder than anything else in building a balsa model and be prepared to screw up a couple of times in the learning process. It's all part of the hobby.

Which kit is it? For Guillow kits currently in production, you can order replacement parts, including canopies here https://www.guillow.com/kitreplacementparts.aspx

I would at least try what a friend recommended, which is placing the canopy in a window, where UV will supposedly clear the yellowing.

That could work.i put old, yellowed decals in a window that gets sun,in a week or 2,the yellow is gone.

Hey Guys Thanks I never thought of using the sun and UV to take the yellow out I'll try it on a corner of the overage. Thanks again.
I've never tried to make a canopy from scratch, I might resort to that, oh by the way the kit is an OLD Sterling P61 Black Widow, I have always liked the looks of the plane since I was a small boy,
I'm now 80 and still actively building. I usually build only Guillows but this one came up on auction and I couldn't pass it up.
